Great Horned Owlet 2019

Changde Wu    2019-04-27

This article documented the photos and video I took during one of my 3 visitings to a great horned owl nest in a cemetery in the west of Boston on March 27, 2019. My first visiting yielded nothing because I was not aware of the cemetery has gates that opens during date time, and was already closed when I got there in the dusk. When I visited the nest one week later, the nest was sursprisingly empty. But the thing was unbelievable since I expected that the fledging would be several weeks later. When I checked with firneds, the bad news is that the lively owlet was very sick days before and likely died. If you examine photos below, it is clear that hairy object next to the owlet was another dead owlet. This is definite tragety for the owl family. It is also a big blow for birds photographers like me since it is the only great horned owl nest I know so far.

This is url in Youtube for the video combined from several video clips from this visisting. It is in 4K format, so it is recommended watching on a 4K TV.

P1 The owlet was asking food from his parent. The hairy object on the left of the owlet is likely a dead sibling.
