American Oystercatchers and Black Skimers
Although American oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) and Black skimmer (Rynchops niger) looks somewhat similar, they are in totally different Family from scientific clasification point of view. The obvious difference is in the shape and color of their beaks. The beak of American oystercatcher has orange color and its upper and lower parts are the same length. In constrast, for Black skimmers, the beak has tow colors with the base orrange colored and the tip black colored; and more interestingly, the upper beak is much shorter than the lower part. These birds are only found along the coast area, and not common in most regions.
