Selected Photos from Snowy Owl 2017 Season (2) - Resting Owls

Changde Wu    2018-06-04

Like their owls, the snowy owls look fairly lazy for one good reason, preserving the energy. Usually, they stay in one location for long time with eyes half-closed, even not bother openning the eye wide. Photogpraphing the flying of snowy owls are always birders preference and enjoyment. Neverthless, watching and photoing the stationary snowy owls are also interesting since this will docuemnt the birds, their behaviors and teh relation to their environments. Snowy owls normally stay in high position such as the top of the dune, utility pole, roof and the treat when hunting, so they can search for preys easily. In other times, when snowy owls are rest they prefer a location that is secure, isolated with natural barriers such a river to separate from people. They will take a high and secure location to stay during night.

By examing the photos of this owl after back to home from the field, I realized that this owl was apparently slim than before. It had acompnied us for amlost three months, followed and harrased by a group of birders. I was starting worrying about the fate of this creature, and was guilt being following it around those days. In most times, I found that the people with less experiece and poor equipment were really the cause that severely interfering the life of the owl, especially during hunting.

The last shooting of the snowy owls in 2017-18 season. It was a raining day. The owl rested on the top of a lamp in a parking lot. This owl gave me and other people great joy in the whole spring time. I hope this owl be healthy, safe and have a happy life.
